World Environment Day (WED) is the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action and is held on 5 June every year. WED celebrations began in 1972 and have grown to become the one of the main vehicles through which the UN stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and encourages political attention and action. WED 2013 in Mongolia continues! The Ulaanbaatar-2013 Мarathon, flagged off by current marathon world record holder Patrick Makau, the UNEP Patron for Clean Air, saw thousands of runners from all over the world wind through the city on a day where its principal streets have been designated car-free. Thousands of spectators from all over the world cheered the runners on this crisp day as balloons and banners with the WED theme—Think.Eat.Save. Reduce Your Foodprint-- greeted the winners at the finish line. Meantime, outside Ulaanbaatar, children and youth celebrated WED in several provinces.
